Château de Thau stands in Gauriac (Gironde), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 16th century, 17th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
What the French Ministry of Culture records
Un premier seigneur est mentionné en 1363. A la Révolution, le château est pillé et la propriété divisée en lots pour être vendue aux enchères en 1795. A cette époque, la demeure est qualifiée de ruine et l'ancien château en partie démoli. L'ensemble fut restauré au 19e siècle avant de se dégrader à nouveau au cours du 20e. Le château proprement dit, qui garde des allures de château fort avec ses tours, date du 16e siècle. Le corps de logis a été remanié au 17e siècle. Les dépendances, y compris l'entrée, ne sont pas antérieures au 17e siècle. Le château se compose de deux ensembles distincts : une forteresse comportant plusieurs tours de flanquement munies de canonnières et une vaste cour entourée de dépendances basses. Un fossé maintenant comblé séparait le château du plateau à l'extrémité duquel il se trouve. Des portes cochères surmontées de frontons, d'ailerons, d'oculi et encadrées de pilastres donnent accès à la cour. Un grand pigeonnier circulaire domine les dépendances. Au nord-est, un système de jardins en terrasse avec degrés et portes à frontons s'étalait jusqu'au bas du promontoire.
