In Coulanges, in the Allier department, the château de Mortillon still bears traces of an earlier feudal manor, its motte still visible near the present buildings. Two round fifteenth century towers, topped with pointed conical roofs, flank a main house that was reworked over the following centuries. The estate passed from the d'Audricourt family to the Lévis family, who held it for more than a century, and its history is linked to Madame de Sévigné, whose relatives owned land in the area.
