To make a day of it

Château de la Souche stands in Doyet (Allier), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

In Doyet, in the Allier department, the Château de la Souche is a fortified tower dating from the 15th century that has kept much of its original defensive layout. Visitors can see a rectangular keep flanked by a stair turret and topped with machicolations, surrounded by a moat and a double enclosure wall. Inside, the ground floor armoury room still holds a painted frieze showing hunting scenes, a rare surviving example of 15th century decoration.
