In Petit-Landau, in the Haut-Rhin, a few collapsed walls and a small copse standing alone in the fields mark the site of the Butenheim castle. Founded around 1050 on a motte, rebuilt in stone in the 12th century and later enlarged in the 16th century by the House of Andlau, it was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and levelled in 1865. This is an archaeological site, excavated in the 1980s, rather than a standing monument, and it preserves the memory of one of Alsace's earliest fortified castles.
