Schloss Beuggen stands on the banks of the Rhine in Rheinfelden (Baden), in the Landkreis Lörrach, in Baden-Württemberg. This former moated castle served for more than five centuries as the seat of the Teutonic Order for the bailiwick of Swabia-Alsace-Burgundy, making it the oldest surviving commandery of that knightly order. Visitors can still trace its turbulent past: fortifications strengthened after the Peasants' War, round defensive towers, and the large baroque wing added in the eighteenth century by the order's architect Johann Caspar Bagnato. The site later served many other purposes, from military hospital to children's home, before becoming a meeting and conference venue.
