Burg Istein is a ruined stronghold perched on the rocky outcrop of the Isteiner Klotz above the village of Istein, part of the municipality of Efringen-Kirchen. Built by the bishops of Basel between the 11th and 12th centuries, it now consists of only scant wall remains, having been fought over, later converted into a fortress, and eventually blown up after the Second World War. A small chapel, the St. Veitskapelle, still stands within a niche in the cliff face and was largely rebuilt in the 1980s. Visitors come mainly for the dramatic cliffside setting and the layered military history rather than for extensive standing remains.
