To make a day of it

Burg Hammerstein (Südschwarzwald) stands in Hammerstein (Landkreis Lörrach), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burg Hammerstein stands on a rocky spur rising some twenty meters above the valley floor, at the junction of the Kander river and the road toward Holzen. Of this medieval stronghold, built to guard a forge, only ruins remain: a 1958 excavation uncovered the foundations of a massive round tower roughly eight meters across. Local tradition speaks of a secret passage once connecting the castle to the mill across the way, and excavation reports from 1958 note a narrow, low gallery leading toward a neighboring building.

What to know

  • This is an open-air ruin with no standing building, freely accessible year-round.
  • Access is from Hammerstein station on the Kandertalbahn line, following stage 12 of the Schwarzwaldwestweg trail toward the Wolfsschlucht and Kandern.
  • A steep stone staircase leads up to the rocky spur, requiring a reasonable level of fitness.
  • What remains visible today is limited to foundations, as the site was partly destroyed by a quarry operation in 1913.
