To make a day of it

Château d'Auzon stands in Auzon (Haute-Loire), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 15th century, 16th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Perched on a rocky spur above the confluence of the Auzon and Gaudarel streams, the ruins of Auzon castle bear witness to centuries of successive alterations. Partly dismantled in the 17th century and sold as national property during the Revolution, it retains only part of its fortified enclosure, a spiral staircase tower and vaulted galleries. Now in private hands, the site is notable for its mix of architectural styles, each reflecting a different building phase.
