In Cahors, a tower rising more than thirty metres still stands out above the townscape: it is the sole remnant of the palace built in the early 14th century by the Duèze family. Pierre Duèze, brother of Pope John XXII, wanted a residence worthy of his relative's papal standing. Torn down from the early 15th century onward to supply stone for repairing the nearby bridge, the building lost everything but its square tower, later absorbed into the town's defensive walls and restored at the end of the 19th century.
