At La Boixe, in the Charente department, a 12th century keep stands above the Charente valley, the last substantial remnant of a castle that once guarded the crossing of two ancient roads. The fortified gateway of the former enclosure also survives, flanked by two truncated round towers, along with an underground passage beneath the keep. The site reflects a long and turbulent history, passing through the hands of the counts of Angoulême, the Lusignan family and the La Rochefoucauld lords over nearly six centuries.
