Overlooking the Charente valley north of Angoulême, Bayers castle still bears traces of a 12th century stronghold beneath the buildings rebuilt in the late 15th century by Guillaume de La Rochefoucauld. Visitors can see a round crenellated tower, a covered wall walk, and two spiral staircase towers facing the inner courtyard, remnants of a defensive design still visible in the layout of the dry moat. Left in ruins after being divided up at the time of the Revolution, the building was restored in 1988.
