To make a day of it

Zollernschloss Balingen stands in Balingen (Zollernalbkreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 13th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Zollernschloss stands at the southeastern edge of Balingen's old town, its water tower a familiar landmark on the street bearing the same name. A small fortified site belonging to the Counts of Zollern already occupied the spot in the 13th century, before a town residence was raised on its foundations around 1370. Sold to Württemberg in 1403 and later passed into private hands, the building came into municipal ownership in 1920, was fully dismantled in 1935 and rebuilt to its former appearance by 1937. The surviving corner tower, once one of four, now houses a museum of scales and weights.

What to know

  • The building seen today results from a reconstruction carried out between 1935 and 1937, following the earlier structure's appearance.
  • The water tower, the only one of the schloss's four original corner towers still standing, houses the museum of scales and weights.
  • The site sits right within Balingen's historic town center, easily combined with a walk through the old town.
  • Opening hours and admission fees are not specified here; check directly with the museum before visiting.
