To make a day of it

Ruine Reußenstein stands in Neidlingen (Landkreis Esslingen), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Recorded dating: 13th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Reussenstein Castle ruins stand on a rocky outcrop more than 760 metres above the Neidlingen valley, on the boundary between the Esslingen district and the Swabian Alb. Built around 1270 as a ministerial castle for the lords of Teck, it is one of the best preserved fortresses of its kind in the region, laid out in three successive sections: an outer bailey, a lower castle and an upper castle cut off by a rock cut ditch. Visible remains include the keep, the residential hall and a bastion like tower later converted into a shelter during twentieth century restoration work. The site now draws both hikers seeking the view and climbers who train on its rock faces.
