Burg Derneck sits on a rocky spur above the valley of the Große Lauter, near Hayingen, within the Swabian Alb UNESCO biosphere reserve. Built before 1350 by Degenhart I of Degeneck, it later passed to the counts of Helfenstein, then to the Fürstenberg family, and eventually to the Kingdom of Württemberg. What remains today is the outer wall, an inner bailey and the Steinhaus, a shield wall topped with a viewing platform, while the former forester's house now serves as a hikers' lodge. Since 1967 the site has belonged to the Schwäbischer Albverein, which runs a simple lodge and tavern there.
What to know

- A simple tavern serves drinks and light meals to day visitors, with advance notice recommended for groups larger than twelve.
