Schloss Urach stands at the edge of the old town of Bad Urach, on the site of a moated castle first built in the mid 11th century for the Counts of Urach. The present building, a rectangular hall structure, dates from around 1400 and was substantially enlarged under Eberhard I on the occasion of his marriage to Barbara Gonzaga. Among its notable rooms is the Goldener Saal, a late Renaissance state room with panelled walls, columns crowned by Corinthian capitals, and gilded decoration that gave the hall its name. Both Eberhard I and Duke Christoph of Württemberg were born within these walls.
