Perched on a rocky spur of the White Jurassic at the edge of the Swabian Alb, Hohenneuffen Castle overlooks the town of Neuffen with its massive ruins. Built in the early 12th century by Mangold von Sulmetingen, it later passed to the House of Württemberg and was transformed in the 16th century, under Duke Ulrich, into a full territorial fortress with bastions and casemates. Used at times as a state prison, it once held notable captives such as Joseph Süß Oppenheimer, before being dismantled at the end of the 18th century. Visitors today can walk among the remaining fortifications and towers, with wide views over the Swabian Alb.
