Burg Staufeneck stands above Salach in the Filstal valley, perched on a spur of the Rehgebirge opposite Burg Ramsberg on the facing hillside. Founded by the lords of Staufeneck at a date still debated, somewhere between 1080 and 1240, the castle later belonged to several noble families of Württemberg before falling into disrepair from 1800 onward. Its 27 metre keep was made accessible again in 1926, and since 1927 the ruins have housed a hotel and a gourmet restaurant.
