To make a day of it

Burg Hohenstaufen stands in Göppingen (Landkreis Göppingen), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Recorded dating: 11th century. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

On the conical summit of the Hohenstaufen, at 684 metres above sea level, only the ruins remain of a fortress founded around 1070 by Duke Frederick I of Swabia. This was the ancestral seat of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, which produced three Holy Roman Emperors between 1155 and 1250, before the stronghold fell and was destroyed in 1525 during the Peasants' War. Today, only excavated foundations and a memorial stele recall the site's former power, along with sweeping views over the Rems and Fils valleys.
