To make a day of it

Burgstall Burren stands in Wäschenbeuren (Landkreis Göppingen), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgstall Burren refers to the remains of a medieval motte, about 600 metres west of the Wäscherburg, on a low grassy knoll near a water tower. It is not a standing castle but an archaeological site, excavated in 1957, which uncovered the foundations of two successive residential towers, a Romanesque one from the early 11th century and a later Gothic one of larger size. Some have speculated that this was the original seat of the Hohenstaufen family, but the archaeological findings give no support to that theory. The land, owned by the Catholic parish of Wäschenbeuren, is now used as sheep pasture.

What to know

  • The site consists only of ground traces, with no standing structure or visible wall of an actual building.
  • There are no opening hours or fees, as the land is used for agricultural grazing.
  • Access is outdoors, on gently sloping terrain, about 600 metres from the Wäscherburg.
  • Sheep are kept on the site, so visitors should mind fences and gates.
  • The supposed link to the Hohenstaufen family remains unconfirmed despite a persistent local legend.
