The Ruine Hohenmelchingen stands on a hilltop site known as the 'Halde', roughly 825 metres above sea level, southeast of Melchingen, a district of Burladingen. Built probably in the 12th century, the fortress was once among the largest strongholds in the Sonnenalb region. Visitors can still make out the remains of a keep, a residential hall, a bathhouse, several tiered courtyards and a system of moats and ramparts. A restoration carried out between 1979 and 1984 by the town of Burladingen stabilised and preserved the remaining structures.
