To make a day of it
Burg Hohenerpfingen stands in Sonnenbühl (Landkreis Reutlingen), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burg Hohenerpfingen, also known as Schnatren, stands as a ruin above the village of Erpfingen, on a rocky spur of the Kobelberg in the Swabian Jura. Founded in the late 12th century, it retains rock-cut ditches and a tall, shield-like front wall that still crowns the outcrop. The site passed through several minor noble families connected to the Zollern, including the Schenken and later the lords of Salmendingen, before fading into obscurity during the 14th century. Visitors come mainly for the wild setting and the view over the Erpf valley rather than for extensive remains.
What to know
- The site is an open-air ruin with free access and no known opening hours or admission fees.
- Only rock-cut ditches and one wall fragment remain, so a visit takes little time.
- Access is via an uphill forest path from Erpfingen, sturdy footwear is recommended.
- No information is available regarding accessibility, parking, or dogs.
- The ruin suits a stop along a Swabian Jura hike rather than a dedicated visit.
