It is the third structure built on this site, the ancestral seat of the House of Hohenzollern, whose members became burgraves of Nuremberg, electors of Brandenburg, kings of Prussia and later German emperors. The present Gothic Revival building dates from the mid-19th century and replaced an earlier fortress left in ruins after centuries of sieges and occupations.
