To make a day of it

Weilerburg (Rottenburg) stands in Rottenburg am Neckar (Landkreis Tübingen), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Weilerburg is a medieval ruin overlooking the hamlet of Weiler, a district of Rottenburg am Neckar, perched atop the 555 metre Rotenberg, also known as the Burgberg. First recorded in 1225, it belonged to the counts of Hohenberg, whose heiress Gertrude is said to have spent her youth here before becoming, as Anna of Habsburg, an ancestress of that dynasty. Destroyed in 1407 and levelled to its foundations in 1624, only a lookout tower and gate rebuilt in 1873/74 recall its former shape. Today the ruin is a popular local outing, with a barbecue area run by a local section of the German Alpine Club.

What to know

  • The ruin can be visited freely with no fixed opening times, but it is reached on foot via a path climbing to the top of the Rotenberg.
  • A drinks stand run by the Rottenburg section of the German Alpine Club opens only when a flag, visible from afar, is raised.
  • A barbecue area allows visitors to picnic on site, making it a popular summer destination.
  • The 24 metre lookout tower, rebuilt in the 19th century, gives views over the Schichtstufenland and the Albtrauf escarpment of the Swabian Jura.
  • No original medieval structure survives, as the castle was razed to its foundations in 1624.
