To make a day of it

Schloss Waldenburg stands in Waldenburg (Landkreis Zwickau), in Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Adult admission costs 10.5 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Waldenburg stands above the Mulde valley in Waldenburg, Saxony, on the site of a fortress founded between 1165 and 1172, whose lower keep of dark rusticated stone still survives. Destroyed by the Hussites in 1430 and later damaged by several fires, it was rebuilt under the Schönburg family in the 16th century and significantly altered during the 18th and 19th centuries. Before 1914 it was regarded as one of the most modern residences in Germany, fitted with central heating, electricity and lifts, and it now combines Rococo, Baroque and English country house styles across its halls, library and chapel. Later used as a lung sanatorium in the mid-20th century, the castle is now owned by the Landkreis Zwickau, which has restored it.

What to know

  • The interior can only be seen on guided tours through the historic rooms.
  • The castle also hosts weddings, concerts and temporary exhibitions, which may limit access to some rooms on certain dates.
  • Grünfelder Park, laid out by the former princes, lies just across the Mulde river and makes a pleasant extension to a visit.
  • An exhibition on films shot at the castle, including The Grand Budapest Hotel, can be seen alongside the princely apartments.
