Stein Castle rises above the Mulde valley in Hartenstein, on a fortified site established around 1200 to protect the seat of local lordship and to guard the river crossing. Part of the structure still dates from the late Romanesque period, and the largely unaltered interior rooms preserve the cramped, dim character of a medieval stronghold. The museum housed inside displays historic weapons, mail armour and a plate harness, along with a collection tied to old legal punishment, including an executioner's sword and instruments of torture. From the upper courtyard and the wall walk, the view opens onto the castle grounds and the surrounding forest.
