To make a day of it

Burg Schönfels stands in Lichtentanne (Landkreis Zwickau), in Saxony, Germany. Adult admission costs 5 EUR. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Schönfels rises on a diabase spur above the village of Schönfels, part of the municipality of Lichtentanne in Saxony. Founded around 1200 as the seat of a medieval colonization effort, it was reshaped in late Gothic and Renaissance style between the 15th and 17th centuries. Left largely uninhabited from 1770 to 1945, it kept an unusually well preserved medieval fabric, including its keep, arcaded gallery, defensive walkway and a 17th century chapel. A museum has occupied the site since 1975, set within its two-courtyard layout.

What to know

  • The visit centers on the museum housed within the medieval two-courtyard complex.
  • The 17th century chapel contains an altarpiece painted by Mathias Crodel the Younger and a rare cabinet wooden organ from around 1730.
  • The site sits on a rocky spur, so expect walking and some uneven ground when exploring the grounds.
  • No verified information on opening hours, prices or accessibility is available for this listing.
