Schloss Planitz stands in Niederplanitz, a district of Zwickau, on a rocky spur above the Planitz stream. A first castle existed here as early as the 12th century, but the building seen today dates from a reconstruction carried out between 1691 and 1712, after the earlier structure was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. The estate passed through many hands over the centuries, from the lords of Planitz to the von Beust and von Arnim families, before becoming municipal property and later a school. The building now houses the Clara-Wieck-Gymnasium and is therefore not open to the public as a heritage site.
