Set on a sandstone platform 140 metres above the Polenz valley, Hohnstein Castle overlooks the small town that bears its name, in Saxon Switzerland. It is the only surviving example of the many fortresses that once stood on the right bank of the Elbe in this region. Founded around 1200, it went through several uses over the centuries, from manorial seat to administrative office, prison and youth hostel. The only access is from Hohnstein's market square, and its architecture combines older remains with stone buildings added in the 17th and 18th centuries.
