Burg Wehlen stands in Stadt Wehlen (Landkreis Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge), in Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Wehlen stands on a rocky spur rising 25 metres above the Elbe, overlooking the town of Stadt Wehlen in Saxony. What remains today is a ruin, the result of centuries of neglect and deliberate demolition. A new lookout tower, built in 2024 on the stump of the former residential tower, was opened in June 2025. The vaulted cellars, cleared in recent years, can be visited as part of guided tours.
What to know
- Access is on foot via an uphill path from the town of Stadt Wehlen, up to the spur above the Elbe.
- The medieval cellars can only be seen on organised guided tours, not on a self-guided basis.
- The current lookout tower, completed in 2024 and opened in 2025, is a modern structure distinct from the original architecture.
- Part of the former fortification, the round building known as the 'Trommel', is privately owned and not open to visitors.
- There are no fixed opening hours or admission fees, as cellar visits depend on a local association.
