To make a day of it

Burg Lilienstein stands in Bad Schandau (Landkreis Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge), in Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Lilienstein sits atop a 415-metre sandstone table rock above the River Elbe, near the village of Waltersdorf in Saxon Switzerland. What remains is a ruin: a few wall fragments near the southern ascent and beam sockets on the northern side, traces of a stronghold raised around 1200. Long held by Bohemia, it passed to the Margraves of Meissen in the early 15th century and was later abandoned. Most visitors climb the rock chiefly for the view over the Elbe valley, the castle ruin being just one feature of the summit plateau.

What to know

  • This is an open-air ruin, reduced to a few wall remnants, with no building to tour.
  • Reaching it requires a walk uphill on a footpath, so some physical effort is needed.
  • The summit gives views over the Elbe valley and Saxon Switzerland.
  • There are no set hours or fees, as the site is outdoors and freely accessible.
