Schloss Kuckuckstein rises above the town of Liebstadt on a gneiss outcrop, about thirty metres over the market square, at a spot that once controlled the trade route between the Elbe valley and Bohemia. A drawbridge leads into a first narrow courtyard framed by the keep, the gatehouse and a connecting wing, before a passage opens onto the larger courtyard lined by the main hall, the so called water house and the kitchen building. The present structure was raised on the foundations of an older stronghold and combines late Gothic elements with later Rococo and Romantic era additions. The keep still holds several stacked vaults, one of which contains a knights' hall topped by a room known as the chapel chamber.

The castle sits on a rocky spur and is reached by a climb from the Liebstadt market square, either on foot or via the access road to the castle slope.
Entry to the inner courtyards crosses a drawbridge, so visitors should expect steps and uneven ground.
