The Schloss Wolkenburg stands on a rocky spur above a bend of the Zwickauer Mulde, just outside the village of Wolkenburg. The present building layers several periods of construction: Romanesque remnants from around 1200, a remodelling into a residential château between 1694 and 1700, and interior work commissioned by Count Detlev Carl von Einsiedel between 1760 and 1810. Visitors can see the round two storey library with its neo Gothic features and the great festival hall decorated with stuccowork by Christian Unger, both regarded as outstanding examples of early Classicist interior design in Saxony.
