To make a day of it

Burgruine Drachenfels stands in Penig (Landkreis Mittelsachsen), in Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgruine Drachenfels is a former spur castle, of which only buried remains survive, on a rocky ridge above the Zwickauer Mulde river near Penig in Saxony. First recorded in 1212 as the seat of the lords of Drachenfels, the castle vanished under circumstances that remain unclear, with some sources pointing to destruction in the 14th century and others to a fire in 1488. For centuries its location was known only from written records, until excavations confirmed the site and uncovered the foundations of a round tower and a defensive ditch. What visitors find today is a quiet, largely overgrown site rather than an imposing ruin.
