Elector Augustus commissioned its construction between 1568 and 1572, replacing an earlier medieval stronghold that had belonged to the lords of Schellenberg and was demolished for the project. Because its Renaissance silhouette can be seen from afar, the building came to be nicknamed crown of the Ore Mountains. Today a motorcycle museum occupies part of what were once the outbuildings.
