Schloss Schönach stands in Mötzing, in the Landkreis Regensburg, Bavaria, on the site of a noble residence first recorded in the 12th century. The present three-storey hip-roofed building dates from 1702, built for Count Johann Georg von Königsfeld, likely to designs by Giovanni Antonio Viscardi. Its baroque interior combines stuccowork by Giovanni Niccolò Perti with frescoes by Hans Georg Asam. Surrounding the main house are early 18th-century pavilions, a tree-lined avenue, a park wall and a farm courtyard with older barns.

What to know

  • The castle has been privately owned since the late 20th century, by the von Einsiedel-Wolftitz family.
  • The knights' hall, decorated with stucco and wall paintings, has remained scaffolded since its ceiling partly collapsed in 1995.
  • The tree-lined avenue and park wall, dating from the first quarter of the 18th century, can be seen from around the site.
  • The eastern pavilion, later used as a forester's house, and the farm courtyard with its old barns complete the ensemble.
