The Burgruine Kallmünz sits atop a 433 metre rocky spur above the confluence of the Vils and Naab rivers, overlooking the market town of Kallmünz. Fortified since Celtic times, the site preserves the remains of a medieval castle built mainly between 1150 and 1280, including a round keep some twenty metres high and the thick walls of a Romanesque great hall with paired round arched windows. Burned and plundered repeatedly between the 16th and 17th centuries, the stronghold was later quarried for stone before being gradually restored from the late 19th century onward. Visitors can still see the keep, the ruined hall, a fragment of the castle chapel and an earlier prehistoric rampart known as the Hungarian Wall.
