On the rocky spur overlooking Kallmünz, between the Vils and Naab rivers, two earthen ramparts of different periods bear witness to a very long sequence of human settlement. This archaeological site, registered as a Bodendenkmal, holds traces of occupation from the late Palaeolithic through the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Urnfield period, Hallstatt culture and early Celtic La Tène period. The inner rampart, 220 metres long and up to 12 metres high in places, lies a hundred metres in front of the medieval castle ruin, while an outer rampart stretches over a kilometre, 650 metres further out. Visitors come here for a landscape shaped by thousands of years of habitation rather than for standing buildings.
