The Donaustauf Castle ruins crown a rocky spur 424 metres above the Danube, right above the market town of Donaustauf in Bavaria. The site had already been fortified by Celtic settlers long before a bishop of Regensburg had a stronghold built here in the early 10th century to defend against Hungarian raids. Four of the original six successive gates still stand, along with the remains of a Romanesque chapel and a massive round tower. The ruins trace nearly a thousand years of struggle between bishops, Bavarian dukes and the city of Regensburg, ending with the fortress's destruction by Swedish troops in 1634.
