To make a day of it

Burgruine Laaber stands in Laaber (Landkreis Regensburg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 11th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burg Laaber ruin sits on a rock above the market town of Laaber, in the Regensburg district. Built at the end of the 12th century by the lords of Laaber to control the crossings of the Labertal valley and the old royal road, it still shows striking rusticated masonry at its second and third gates and the massive stump of a rectangular keep dating from around 1200. Remnants of the residential buildings with Romanesque windows survive on the south and east sides, along with a cistern in the courtyard.

What to know

  • It is an open-air ruin with no visitor facilities or known fixed opening hours.
  • The site is protected both as a Baudenkmal and a Bodendenkmal, reflecting its archaeological importance.
  • The uneven ground, including the old moat and remains of towers and walls, calls for sturdy shoes and care.
