To make a day of it

Residenz Eichstätt stands in Eichstätt (Landkreis Eichstätt), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Residenz Eichstätt stands on the site of the medieval bishop's court, destroyed by fire in 1633 and 1634 during the Thirty Years' War. The present three-wing building was erected from 1700 under Jakob Engel and later Gabriel de Gabrieli for the prince-bishops of Eichstätt, with Maurizio Pedetti later adding rococo interiors. Highlights include the grand staircase, with its wrought-iron railing and a ceiling fresco by Johann Michael Franz depicting the fall of Phaethon, as well as the Hall of Mirrors with its mythological ceiling scenes. From 1817 it served as residence to Eugène de Beauharnais, and since 1976 it has housed the district administration of Landkreis Eichstätt.

What to know

  • The Residenz overlooks the Residenzplatz, a square centred on a Marian column surrounded by putti figures.
  • No opening hours or admission fees are given here, so check locally before visiting.
