Wülzburg stands in Weißenburg in Bayern (Landkreis Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Wülzburg crowns a hilltop of the Frankenalb range above Weißenburg in Bayern and ranks among the best preserved Renaissance fortresses in Germany. A Benedictine monastery once stood on the site before Margrave Georg Friedrich the Elder of Brandenburg-Ansbach had the monastic buildings leveled in 1588 to raise a fortress, completed around 1610. Visitors can still trace the bastioned outline of the stronghold, along with the southern wing, the only part kept out of the city's 1882 purchase. Its history includes a curious episode: Charles de Gaulle was held here as a prisoner of war in 1918.
