Schloss Altenmuhr stands at the northern edge of the village of Altenmuhr, beside the Altmühl river, behind traces of the moat that once surrounded the whole complex. Founded in the 12th century by the lords of Muhr, it underwent several rebuildings, most notably in the early 17th century, the period to which the main surviving wing belongs. Visitors can see a five storey keep in good condition, a west wing with stucco ceilings attributed to the Nuremberg craftsman Hans Kuhn, and an east wing containing a room lined with a grisaille wallpaper from around 1810 to 1820. The estate has belonged to the von Le Suire family since the 19th century and remains in their hands.
