The Schloss Spielberg is a former hilltop castle perched on the Hahnenkamm ridge, a few kilometres south of Gunzenhausen. Its oval layout and five-metre-high ring walls, dating from the 12th century, have survived intact and give the whole complex a commanding silhouette visible from afar. Once the seat of the von Oettingen-Spielberg family, the castle now houses the Steinacker contemporary art gallery within its historic rooms. From the surrounding plateau, the view stretches over the Altmühlsee, the Hesselberg and the hills of the Swabian-Franconian Alb.
