Abenberg Castle rises above the small Franconian town that shares its name, in the Landkreis Roth in Bavaria. Originally a timber stronghold of the 11th century, it was rebuilt in stone during the 12th century under Count Rapoto and became one of the most massive fortified complexes of its time in Bavaria. It later passed to the Hohenzollern family and then to the prince-bishopric of Eichstätt, before falling into decline for long stretches until restoration work began in the late 19th century. Today the castle houses a museum of Franconian history, a lace-making museum, as well as a hotel and restaurant within its old walls.
