Burgruine Hilpoltstein stands in Hilpoltstein (Landkreis Roth), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burgruine Hilpoltstein overlooks the town of the same name from a sandstone outcrop in the Landkreis Roth, Bavaria. Founded around 1100 by the lords of Stein, it reached its architectural peak in the 13th century under Heinrich von Stein, with a final phase of works carried out in the early 17th century by Duchess Maria Dorothea. Visitors can see a remarkably well-preserved 22-metre keep, sections of bossed sandstone walls, and an entrance cut straight into the rock. The ruin still hosts open-air events, including a summer ruin theatre.
What to know
- The ruin can be visited from April to October.
- Access to the keep goes through a narrow passage cut into the rock, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
- A medieval festival takes place around the site in May, and a traditional Burgfest is held in early August.
- In July and August the ruin becomes an open-air stage for a summer theatre.
- The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria.
