To make a day of it

Lunkenburg stands in Meinheim (Landkreis Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Lunkenburg survives today only as an archaeological site in the Wolfsbronn valley, on the eastern edge of the Hahnenkamm range. What remains are the traces of a medieval motte, an artificial mound that once carried a fortified tower, together with an outer bailey. The ground is still ringed by ditches and earthen banks up to roughly three metres high, though no masonry walls remain standing. Visitors will find a wooded mound and adjoining farmland rather than a castle in the conventional sense.

What to know

  • No standing structure remains: only a mound, ditches and earthen banks mark the former motte.
  • The site lies in open countryside near Wolfsbronn, a hamlet belonging to the municipality of Meinheim, right beside the district road WUG 34.
  • There is no signpost on site, so finding the location requires some preparation beforehand.
  • The mound area is now wooded, while the former outer bailey is used as farmland.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or visitor facilities, since this is an open-air archaeological site rather than a monument set up for tourism.
