The Ellingen Residence stands on the site of a commandery founded in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order, whose Franconian bailiwick had its seat here until 1789. The present building, erected between 1717 and 1721 under the direction of Karl Heinrich von Hornstein, combines Baroque decoration, including painted ceilings and stucco by Franz Joseph Roth, with Neoclassical additions made around 1775 by Pierre Michel d'Ixnard. Given in 1815 to Field Marshal Carl Philipp von Wrede, the residence was then fitted with Parisian furniture and silk or paper wall coverings that now form one of Bavaria's finest Neoclassical interiors. The state rooms can be seen on guided tours, while the palace church, with its Gothic core, still hosts concerts.
