The Burgstall Michaelsberg marks the remains of a vanished fortified site, set on the plateau of a spur south-southwest of Kipfenberg in Bavaria. The place was occupied in successive periods from the Bronze Age through to the early Middle Ages, before a medieval stronghold was built there and later abandoned. What to know

  • No standing building remains, only earthworks, ditches and buried foundations.
  • The site sits on a spur plateau at roughly 480 metres above sea level, reached by a hiking path.
  • The visit takes place outdoors, with no built structure or marked tourist trail.
  • The Altmühl river flows below, about 300 metres away and 60 metres lower.
  • It suits a moderate walk rather than a tour of a standing castle.
