To make a day of it

Burg Rotenhan stands in Ebern (Landkreis Haßberge), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Rotenhan is a medieval ruin standing on a rocky outcrop roughly two kilometres north of Ebern in Bavaria. Ancestral seat of the von Rotenhan family, it is notable for a rare building technique in Germany: several sandstone blocks carved directly from the bedrock and joined together by walls. Besieged and destroyed in 1323 by the Bishop of Würzburg, it was never rebuilt under the terms of a 1324 treaty. What remains today are fragments of standing masonry and a pointed-arch doorway dating from its final late Romanesque to early Gothic phase.
