To make a day of it
Burgruine Runding stands in Runding (Landkreis Cham), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Runding stands on the Schlossberg above the Bavarian village that bears its name. What remains today, once among the largest fortified complexes in the Bavarian Forest, covers close to 15,000 square metres and includes a walkable rampart nearly 400 metres long. The ruins now form the setting for an open air archaeological museum, the result of more than a decade of excavation work.
What to know
- The site is visited outdoors, along a walkable rampart and among open air masonry ruins.
- The former fortress covered around 15,000 square metres, so a full visit involves a fairly long walk.
- Archaeological excavations carried out between 1999 and 2011 led to an open air museum area integrated into the ruins.
- The hilltop location on the Schlossberg means uneven ground and slopes typical of an unrestored ruin.
- As no opening hours or fees are confirmed in the verified facts, visitors should check with the Runding municipality beforehand.
